Illnesses

Getting sick sucks. Getting sick while pregnant sucks even more, plus you get sick a lot more. I had a small cold in my first trimester, nothing too bad. As the last of the morning sickness went away, I got to reunite with my  dear friend, the stomach bug. I was feeling nauseous as I dropped David off at work at 6:30am. Just as he got out of the car and went into the building, I had to throw the car in park and throw my door open and puke up the previous nights french fries. I'm still reluctant to eat oven cooked fries at home. I was miserable.
A few weeks ago I got a cold. I was plugged up and then I developed a cough. Now you can think me a bad mom for this, but the menthol cough drops I was told I can take were only helping so-so. I had reached the point   where I was coughing so hard, I was puking. The Robitussin dm came up almost instantly, and the Sudaphed only helps with sinuses. So I grabbed a spoon like I would for cereal, and the Irish whiskey out of the cupboard and the honey, a spoonful of honey and whiskey and I was sleeping like a baby with little to no cough. I talked to my midwife about this, and she said it was fine since it's not like I'm doing jello-shots or shots of Everclear. A spoonful was it. She then informed me if I wanted to have a little drink of wine every now and then I could do that too, as long as I'm not getting wasted and doing it every night. That is my cold/cough remedy. Its great for when you're not pregnant too.
This last week we had a company potluck for our Christmas party. I don't think we're ever going to be having a potluck ever again. Everything was fine the rest of the day. The turkey, mashed potatoes, green bean casserole and all the cookies I ate were great. And then around 3am the next day I woke up having to take a horrid dump. TMI ALERT: It felt like it had a consistency of diarrhea but just a tinge more solid. I knew then that I probably wasn't going to make it to work. Sure enough when my alarm went off at 7 I had to go again. No, I was not going to work, plus I was tired from waking up in the middle of the night twice (once to shit and once again to piss). The Friday after the potluck, my training class greeted me with a "Oh we were worried about you! Did you get what everyone else had?" I looked at them with a puzzled expression and they proceeded to tell me that almost everyone at my company had woken up at 3am after the potluck to either shit, puke or both. So glad it was only crap for me. They also scared me with stories of people going to the hospital from dehydration and things of that nature. My first break came along and I was on the phone with my midwife. Luckily, food poisoning does not harm the baby, however, they do worry about cramping and dehydration when such events occur. Thankfully, I didn't get it that bad. I'm never eating turkey/at a potluck again.

[stay tuned for more illness posts as I'm sure there will be plenty more]
